Palermo & the Evolution of the City

8 Days
Palermo, Sicily

Once the epicenter of successive empires and cultures—from Phoenicians and Greeks to Arabs, Normans, and Spanish—Sicily bears the imprint of centuries of migration, conquest, and exchange. Palermo, its capital, offers a concentrated case study of these forces, where the island’s history unfolds not only in its monuments but also in the rhythms of daily life, as ancient elements coexist and overlap with the modern city.

This course examines Palermo through the lens of urban morphology: how cities develop, adapt, and interact with both human and natural forces. Participants will consider questions of urban resilience—what happens when cities must be intentionally rebuilt after disaster, and how they evolve organically over time in dialogue with their environment.

Drawing on history, archaeology, anthropology, and architecture, the course offers a multidimensional way of understanding the city. While Palermo provides the focal point, the aim is broader: to consider how all cities embody the layers of their past, determine the physical shape of their cultures, and continue to reinvent themselves in the face of changing human needs and natural environments.

Extracurriculars

Your Facilitator will organize two optional activities during free afternoons or evenings. Details and costs for these Extracurriculars will be provided one month in advance, and if you choose to participate, we will handle the booking. For outings such as concerts, performances, or tastings, your Facilitator will accompany you to the event.

These optional activities complement the many ways you’ll personalize your experience through Self-Guided Study and free time.

Extracurriculars for this course may include:

Street Food Walk Through Palermo
Palermo’s streets tell stories—in stone, in sound, and perhaps most vividly, in flavor. On this walk through the city’s historic quarters, we’ll sample the signature street foods that reflect Sicily’s multicultural past and enduring appetite for bold, unfussy cuisine. Expect to taste panelle (crispy chickpea fritters), arancine (saffron rice balls stuffed with ragù or cheese), and sfincione (a thick, spongy pizza topped with tomato, onion, anchovies, and breadcrumbs). Each bite carries a piece of the city’s layered history—and makes a compelling case for why Palermo is considered one of the world’s great street food capitals.

Evening Performance at the Teatro Massimo or Politeama
Palermo’s grand 19th-century theaters remain vital gathering places for music, opera, and dance. Depending on the season, we’ll attend a performance at either the majestic Teatro Massimo—Italy’s largest opera house—or the neoclassical Teatro Politeama. Whether it’s Verdi or contemporary Sicilian choreography, the evening offers not only cultural enrichment but a window into Palermo’s ongoing artistic revival and civic spirit.

Excursion to Monreale
A short drive from Palermo, the hillside town of Monreale offers a sweeping change of pace—and one of the island’s most extraordinary architectural treasures. The 12th-century cathedral is renowned for its glittering Byzantine mosaics, among the finest in the world, and its cloister is a tranquil masterpiece of Arab-Norman design. After exploring the cathedral, we’ll linger in the hilltop air with a relaxed lunch or aperitif overlooking the famed Conca d’Oro, the “Golden Shell” valley once filled with citrus groves. It’s an unhurried way to take in Sicily’s natural beauty and centuries-old layers of cultural expression.

Boat Excursion Along the Palermo Coast
Sicily has always been shaped by the sea—and seeing Palermo from the water offers a striking new perspective on the city’s dramatic coastline. We’ll board a small boat for a scenic cruise past historic ports, rocky coves, and the skyline of Palermo framed by Monte Pellegrino. Spend the afternoon enjoying the city from a different angle, with sea breezes and panoramic views.

What to Expect

  • Coming from the United States, you have two options:

    • Book your flight to Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport, with a connection through Paris. Give yourself plenty of time for the connection, since you will go through border control when you land in Paris. At the Montpellier airport, grab a taxi and it’s less than 30 minutes to the Château de la Piscine.

    • Book your flight to Paris-Charles de Gaule and book a TGV (fast train) to Montpellier leaving straight from Charles de Gaule. It’s a comfortable 4-hour ride either to Montpellier-Saint Roch Station (15 minute taxi to the château) or Montpellier Sud de France Station (30 minute taxi to the château). Give yourself plenty of time to get from the airplane through border control and to the airport train station.*

Coming from Paris (if you’re already in the city):

    • Book a TGV (fast train) ticket from Gare de Lyon to either Montpellier-Saint Roch Station (15 minute taxi to the château) or Montpellier Sud de France Station (30 minute taxi to the château). The train takes 3.5 hours.

Note: When booking a train, avoid having to change trains in Marseille or Lyon (or elsewhere). If you see the journey takes longer that what is indicated above, that probably means it’s not direct.

*When booking a train from CDG after an international flight, beware that a delayed flight leading to a missed train can cause undue complications. We don’t recommend this option unless you are booking the whole trip through a travel agent who can assist with rebooking if necessary, or if you are familiar with traveling on SNCF.

  • On this Elective you have the best of both worlds: you can lounge on the bucolic grounds of the château or be out and about in the city at any time.

To get to the center of Montpellier from the château, it’s an easy 20-minute trip on the city’s tram (which stops just down the street from the château’s main gate). Taxis and Ubers are also readily available, however, the majority of the center is reserved for pedestrians. So, once there, you will be walking to get from place to place.

Field Seminars mostly take place in the city and thus require quite a bit of walking.

  • Montpellier is one of the sunniest cities in France, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. In both late September and March, you can expect mild temperatures, clear skies, and golden light—ideal conditions for exploring the city’s open-air markets, gardens, and café-lined squares.

  • France uses the Euro. Euros can easily be obtained at ATMs at the airport upon arrival or at any bank in Montpellier. Visa and Mastercard are taken almost everywhere; AMEX is less widely accepted.

We recommend traveling with only a small amount of cash for tips or small purchases (a cup of coffee or a bottle of water). Check exchange fees with your credit card provider before traveling.

  • Montpellier has a strong healthcare infrastructure, with several modern hospitals and clinics offering high-quality medical care. It happens to be home to the world’s oldest operating medical school, which remains an important part of the city’s healthcare and academic landscape.

Travel insurance is mandatory for participation. Please reach out if you have questions about this or would like recommendations of providers.

  • You will need to have a passport that is valid until 6 months after your travel ends. We will ask you to provide your passport information along with health & dietary information, an emergency contact, travel insurance, and your arrival and departure information.

  • Montpellier is considered a safe city for travelers, with a walkable city center and a reliable tram system that’s widely used and known for being safe and convenient.

As with all international travel, we recommend that participants enroll in the U.S. State Department’s STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) to receive important updates and support while abroad.
