Art & Art de Vivre in Montpellier
8 Days
Montpellier, France
From the richly restored interiors of an 18th-century château to the galleries of Montpellier’s world-renowned art museum and the city’s vibrant contemporary art scene, this Elective offers a wide-ranging encounter with French art across time. Alongside it, you'll explore the French concept of art de vivre—a philosophy of daily life that prizes beauty, intentionality, and pleasure in all its forms, from design and food to conversation and ritual. Together, these lenses offer a unique way to understand southern France—not only through its artworks, but through how people have chosen to live, then and now.
You’ll stay at the Château de la Piscine, a historic estate thoughtfully restored by its current owners. While accommodations are in the estate’s converted guest residences, you’ll be welcomed as a guest of the château—invited for drinks and dinner in the main house and hosted by the owner. The château becomes part of the curriculum with a guided tour of its historic interiors and a conversation about the restoration process, offering a rare glimpse into the evolution of French domestic life and architectural aesthetics over the centuries.
Field Seminars take you through the Musée Fabre’s masterworks, into contemporary galleries, and out to the city’s markets and terrasses. Through a week that blends guided study and independent exploration, you’ll engage deeply with the relationship between place, aesthetics, and daily life—inviting critical observation, personal reflection, and lived experience.

Le Château de la Piscine – Your Home in Montpellier
A rare example of a folie montpelliéraine—the elegant country estates built for Montpellier’s 18th-century aristocracy—le Château de la Piscine has remained in the same family since 1894. Set within over 20 acres of gardens, it was classified as a historic monument in 1942. Once a retreat for artists as well as aristocrats, the château hosted Queen Elizabeth II on a private visit to France. It has recently been carefully restored to revive its cultural and artistic spirit.
Located within the city of Montpellier, just outside the historic center, the château offers a quiet retreat with easy access to the center via the city’s well-connected tram system.
Accommodations are in Le Mas, a beautifully renovated part of the estate separate from the main château. The spacious, air-conditioned, one-bedroom apartments each feature a large bathroom and a kitchenette, blending modern comfort with the character of the property.
Each morning, a continental breakfast is served in the garden, where the cohort gathers for Daily Discussion before heading off for a Field Seminar in the city or the surrounding region.

Details and costs for these Extracurriculars will be provided one month in advance, and if you choose to participate, we will handle the booking. These optional activities complement the many ways you’ll personalize your experience through Self-Guided Study and free time.
Extracurriculars for this course may include:
Visit to an Oyster Farm on the Étang de Thau
The Étang de Thau, a vast coastal lagoon bordering the Mediterranean, is an ecological landmark of the region. Home to some of France’s finest oysters and mussels, this delicate ecosystem balances traditional shellfish farming with environmental preservation. We’ll visit an oyster farm to learn about the sustainable farming practices that have defined the area for centuries—and, of course, enjoy a tasting of ultra-fresh oysters paired with a crisp Languedoc white wine.
Cooking Class in the Kitchen of the Château
Step into the kitchen of the Château de la Piscine for a hands-on introduction to traditional Sètois cuisine, rooted in the Mediterranean flavors of the region. Together, you’ll prepare a meal that reflects the culinary heritage of the Languedoc—then gather to enjoy it in the convivial spirit of French communal dining.
Evening Concert in Montpellier
Montpellier has a rich cultural calendar, with an ever-changing lineup of classical, jazz, and contemporary performances. Depending on the cultural programming the week of the Elective, we’ll attend a concert chosen from the season’s offerings—perhaps an opera at the historic Opéra Comédie, a chamber performance in an intimate venue, or a contemporary show in one of the city’s lively music spaces.
Half-Day Excursion to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert
Nestled in the cliffs of the Hérault Valley, the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is thought by many to be one of the most beautiful in France. At its heart lies the Abbey of Gellone, a UNESCO-listed Romanesque masterpiece founded in 804. We’ll wander the picturesque stone streets and enjoy an apéro under the massive plane tree in the town square before heading to dinner in a nearby village.
What to Expect
-
Coming from the United States, you have two options:
Book your flight to Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport, with a connection through Paris. Give yourself plenty of time for the connection, since you will go through border control when you land in Paris. At the Montpellier airport, grab a taxi and it’s less than 30 minutes to the Château de la Piscine.
Book your flight to Paris-Charles de Gaule and book a TGV (fast train) to Montpellier leaving straight from Charles de Gaule. It’s a comfortable 4-hour ride either to Montpellier-Saint Roch Station (15 minute taxi to the château) or Montpellier Sud de France Station (30 minute taxi to the château). Give yourself plenty of time to get from the airplane through border control and to the airport train station.*
Coming from Paris (if you’re already in the city):
Book a TGV (fast train) ticket from Gare de Lyon to either Montpellier-Saint Roch Station (15 minute taxi to the château) or Montpellier Sud de France Station (30 minute taxi to the château). The train takes 3.5 hours.
Note: When booking a train, avoid having to change trains in Marseille or Lyon (or elsewhere). If you see the journey takes longer that what is indicated above, that probably means it’s not direct.
*When booking a train from CDG after an international flight, beware that a delayed flight leading to a missed train can cause undue complications. We don’t recommend this option unless you are booking the whole trip through a travel agent who can assist with rebooking if necessary, or if you are familiar with traveling on SNCF.
-
On this Elective you have the best of both worlds: you can lounge on the bucolic grounds of the château or be out and about in the city at any time.
To get to the center of Montpellier from the château, it’s an easy 20-minute trip on the city’s tram (which stops just down the street from the château’s main gate). Taxis and Ubers are also readily available, however, the majority of the center is reserved for pedestrians. So, once there, you will be walking to get from place to place.
Field Seminars mostly take place in the city and thus require quite a bit of walking.
-
Montpellier is one of the sunniest cities in France, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. In both late September and March, you can expect mild temperatures, clear skies, and golden light—ideal conditions for exploring the city’s open-air markets, gardens, and café-lined squares.
-
France uses the Euro. Euros can easily be obtained at ATMs at the airport upon arrival or at any bank in Montpellier. Visa and Mastercard are taken almost everywhere; AMEX is less widely accepted.
We recommend traveling with only a small amount of cash for tips or small purchases (a cup of coffee or a bottle of water). Check exchange fees with your credit card provider before traveling.
-
Montpellier has a strong healthcare infrastructure, with several modern hospitals and clinics offering high-quality medical care. It happens to be home to the world’s oldest operating medical school, which remains an important part of the city’s healthcare and academic landscape.
Travel insurance is mandatory for participation. Please reach out if you have questions about this or would like recommendations of providers.
-
You will need to have a passport that is valid until 6 months after your travel ends. We will ask you to provide your passport information along with health & dietary information, an emergency contact, travel insurance, and your arrival and departure information.
-
Montpellier is considered a safe city for travelers, with a walkable city center and a reliable tram system that’s widely used and known for being safe and convenient.
As with all international travel, we recommend that participants enroll in the U.S. State Department’s STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) to receive important updates and support while abroad.
