Emre Öktem
Instructor, World Religions in Istanbul
Emre Öktem is a professor of international law and Chair of the Department of International Law at Galatasaray University Law School, where he specializes in the historical and contemporary dimensions of global legal systems.
His research and publications span the law of war, human rights, piracy, minority and religious rights, as well as the history of international law in the Ottoman Empire. Through this work, Emre bridges legal scholarship with deep historical inquiry, offering a nuanced understanding of how legal traditions evolve across time and geography.
He is also the author of Secret Istanbul (2016, published in several languages) and Multilingual Epigraphies in Istanbul (2022), works that reflect his broader interest in the layered cultural and historical identity of Istanbul.
